Greenwood County has a severe animal overpopulation problem. Since 2003, over 46,000 unwanted or stray dogs and cats have been brought to the animal shelter;
sadly, only 1 in 5 left alive.

A long-time Humane Society volunteer is speaking at a public meeting of the Greenwood County Council to rally help and propose changes that could save the lives of thousands of animals.

The intention is to create awareness of the problem and suggest changes that will benefit both Greenwood’s human and animal residents. The presentation is first on the agenda.

Every citizen needs to attend this meeting as a demonstration of support. Whether you’re an “animal lover” or not, if local government and the community do not take action NOW, more tax dollars will be spent, health risks will increase, and the problem will grow bigger than ever imagined.

If you’re not sure if you should attend, please watch this short documentary filmed and produced by Operation Paws for Homes, a rescue group who is partnered with the Humane Society of Greenwood, and transports dogs from Greenwood’s Animal Shelter to adoptive homes farther north. The fact that more dogs are adopted into new homes by leaving Greenwood, rather than adopted locally, is proof enough that there are more animals in our community than we can manage.

Your presence will help efforts to save more lives and make Greenwood a humane community!
